The short answer
Dermaplaning is a professional exfoliation in which a sterile, single-use No. 10 surgical blade lifts away dead skin and peach fuzz in about 30 minutes. Skin looks smoother and brighter straight away and makeup sits better. A Vitamin-C peel afterwards adds extra glow. At MG Makeovers in Gurugram it is ₹1,999, with the peel included free.
What is dermaplaning?
Your skin sheds dead cells all the time, but some build up on the surface and make it look dull and feel rough. Fine, soft facial hair, called vellus hair or peach fuzz, traps oil and makeup on top of that. Dermaplaning removes both in a single treatment: a blade skims the outermost layer of the skin (the stratum corneum) and the fine hair on it.
It is not a deep treatment and does not remove acne scars or deep wrinkles. What it does well is refresh the surface: smoother texture, a brighter look and a clean base for skincare and makeup, with no downtime.
The tool
The No. 10 surgical blade
Professional dermaplaning uses a No. 10 surgical scalpel blade: a stainless-steel blade with a broad, gently curved cutting edge, fitted to a reusable scalpel handle. The curve lets it sweep across the cheeks and jaw in short, even strokes without digging in.
- Sterile and sealed until it is opened in front of you.
- Single use: a new blade for every client, disposed of in a sharps container.
- Held at a shallow angle on taut skin, so it skims the surface instead of cutting.
- Much sharper and more precise than a face razor, which is why technique matters.
Why it should be done by a professional
At-home face razors are sold as “dermaplaning tools”, but they do something different. Here is how a professional treatment compares.
| Professional dermaplaning | At-home face razor | |
|---|---|---|
| Blade | Sterile, single-use No. 10 surgical stainless-steel blade on a scalpel handle | Disposable eyebrow or face razor |
| What it removes | Dead skin (the top layer of the stratum corneum) and peach fuzz in one controlled pass | Mostly hair; little real exfoliation |
| Angle and pressure | Held at a shallow, consistent angle with the skin stretched taut | Hard to judge on your own face, especially around the nose and jaw |
| Skin check first | Skin assessed for acne, irritation and recent treatments | No one checks whether your skin is suitable |
| Hygiene | New blade every client, cleansed and prepped skin, gloves | Razors reused, nicks and bacteria spread |
| Finish | Soothing serums, Vitamin-C peel, SPF | Usually nothing, so skin is left unprotected |
The risks of doing it yourself are nicks, irritation, spreading bacteria from a breakout across the face, and over-exfoliating thin areas.
Benefits of dermaplaning
- Removes peach fuzz, so skin looks smoother and cleaner.
- Exfoliates dead surface skin for a softer feel.
- Gives an instant glow, ideal before events.
- Helps serums and moisturisers spread and absorb more evenly.
- Makeup and foundation go on smoother and look less cakey.
- No downtime; most people go straight back to their day.
The Vitamin-C peel finish
Every session at MG Makeovers ends with a complimentary Vitamin-C peel straight after dermaplaning. With dead skin and fine hair gone, the peel spreads evenly and works directly on fresh skin, which is why the two are paired.
Brighter-looking skin
Vitamin C helps fade dullness and evens out the look of skin tone over a course of treatments.
Antioxidant protection
It helps defend skin against everyday damage from sun and pollution.
Better penetration
With dead skin and peach fuzz removed, the peel spreads evenly and reaches the skin directly.
Refined texture
The gentle peel adds a second, chemical layer of exfoliation to the blade's physical one.
Event-ready glow
The combination gives a more visible same-week glow than dermaplaning alone.
A mild tingle is normal. The peel is skipped if your skin is irritated, sunburnt or very sensitive on the day.

Dermaplaning questions, answered
What blade is used for dermaplaning?
Professionals use a sterile, single-use No. 10 surgical stainless-steel blade fitted to a scalpel handle. It is sharp and broad enough to glide across the skin at a shallow angle, and a new blade is opened for every client.
Is dermaplaning the same as shaving my face?
No. A razor mainly removes hair. A professional dermaplaning blade, held at a precise angle on taut skin, also lifts the top layer of dead skin cells, which is what gives the smoother texture and glow.
Will my facial hair grow back thicker or darker?
No. Dermaplaning cuts fine vellus hair at the surface; it does not change the follicle, so hair grows back the same thickness and colour.
Why add a Vitamin-C peel after dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning clears away dead skin and peach fuzz, so the peel spreads evenly and works directly on fresh skin. Vitamin C brightens and evens the look of skin tone and adds antioxidant protection, giving a more visible glow than dermaplaning alone.
How much does dermaplaning cost at MG Makeovers?
Dermaplaning is ₹1,999 and takes about 30 minutes, with a complimentary Vitamin-C peel and a free consultation included. All prices are exclusive of 5% GST. A 2–3% transaction charge applies to card payments.
How often should I get dermaplaning?
Every 3–4 weeks, in line with the skin's natural renewal cycle. More often than that can irritate the skin.
How many days before an event should I get dermaplaning?
Two to three days before is ideal: any slight pinkness has settled and makeup goes on smoothly. If you have never had it before, try a session a few weeks earlier first.
Who should not get dermaplaning?
Avoid it with active acne or breakouts, sunburn, inflamed or broken skin, or within six months of taking isotretinoin. Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids a few days before. If you are pregnant, check with your doctor, especially before adding a peel.
