The short answer
Nail extensions add length and strength with acrylic or gel built over your own nails. A full set takes about two hours, needs a refill every two to three weeks and, applied and removed properly, does not ruin your nails. At MG Makeovers a full set starts at ₹999 for acrylic and ₹1,200 for gel, in any shape.
What are nail extensions?
Extensions are a layer of acrylic or gel bonded to your natural nail and built out past the fingertip, either over a plastic tip or sculpted on a form. They give you even length on all ten nails, a strong, glossy surface that does not chip like polish, and a base for colour and nail art.
They suit anyone whose nails break, peel or will not grow evenly, anyone who wants a special-occasion set, and anyone tired of repainting nails every few days.
Types of nail extensions
Acrylic extensions
Liquid monomer and powder are mixed into a bead, sculpted over a tip or form, and harden in the air.
Feels: Hard and very strong; slightly thicker.
Best for: Long lengths, dramatic shapes and hands that work hard.

Gel extensions
Builder gel is layered over a tip or form and cured under an LED/UV lamp.
Feels: Lighter, flexible and glossy; looks the most natural.
Best for: Short to medium natural-looking sets and first-timers.

Gel overlay (no extension)
A layer of builder gel over your own nails, with no added length.
Feels: Your own nail length, just stronger and glossy.
Best for: Weak or peeling nails that you want to grow out.

Other types you may hear about
- Polygel: A thick gel-acrylic hybrid shaped by hand and cured under a lamp. Light like gel, strong like acrylic.
- Soft gel (full-cover) tips: Pre-shaped gel tips bonded over the whole nail. Quick and even, but less customisable in length and shape.
- Press-on nails: Ready-made nails glued on at home. Fine for a day or two; they don't bond like a salon set and can damage nails if pulled off.

Choosing your shape, length and finish
Shape should suit your hands and your day. Round and squoval are the strongest and easiest to live with; almond and oval lengthen short fingers; coffin and stiletto are bold but need length. Start at short to medium length for your first set; you can go longer at your refill.

Do nail extensions damage your nails?
Done well, no. Most “damage” comes from a handful of avoidable mistakes:
- Heavy filing that thins the natural nail during prep.
- Gel or acrylic touching the skin, which causes lifting and can trigger allergies.
- Picking, biting or ripping extensions off instead of booking a removal.
- Skipping refills, so long overgrown nails lever off and break.
- Cheap, unbranded acrylic liquid that bonds too hard.
Refills, removal and aftercare
- Book a refill every 2–3 weeks to fill the regrowth gap and rebalance the nail.
- Wear gloves for cleaning and dishes, and dry hands well.
- Apply cuticle oil daily; it keeps the nail and skin flexible.
- Don't use your nails as tools to open cans or scrape labels.
- If a nail lifts or cracks, come in for a repair rather than gluing it at home.
- Always have extensions removed professionally.
How to choose a nail salon near you
- Look at photos of their own clients' nails, ideally grown-out ones too.
- Check that metal tools are cleaned between clients and files are fresh.
- Ask which products they use; professional brands, not unlabelled bottles.
- Expect a short consultation before they start.
- Clear, published prices with taxes stated.

Nail extension questions, answered
How long do nail extensions last?
The extensions themselves stay on until removed, but your natural nail grows underneath. Most people book a refill every two to three weeks; after several refills, a fresh set often looks and wears better.
Do nail extensions damage your natural nails?
Not when they are applied and removed properly. Damage comes from over-filing during prep, product on the skin, picking or ripping extensions off, and skipping refills. Professional removal and a short break with cuticle oil keep natural nails healthy.
How long does a full set of nail extensions take?
About two hours for a full acrylic or gel set. Chrome or cat-eye finishes add 30–60 minutes, a refill takes about 75 minutes and removal about 30 minutes.
Which is better for a first set, acrylic or gel?
Gel is usually easier to wear first: it is lighter, flexible and looks natural. Choose acrylic if you want long or dramatic shapes or are hard on your hands.
How much do nail extensions cost in Gurgaon?
At MG Makeovers a full acrylic set is ₹999, gel ₹1,200, a refill ₹999 and removal ₹499; nail art is ₹150 / nail. All prices are exclusive of 5% GST. A 2–3% transaction charge applies to card payments.
Can I get extensions on very short or bitten nails?
Usually yes. Extensions can be built on short natural nails as long as there is enough nail plate to bond to and no infection or broken skin. Your technician will check at the consultation.
Can I shower, cook and work out with nail extensions?
Yes. Wear gloves for cleaning and dishes, dry your hands well, and avoid using your nails as tools. Shorter, rounder shapes cope best with heavy hand use.
