The short answer
There are eight main nail shapes: round, square, squoval, almond, oval, coffin, stiletto and lipstick. Round and squoval are the strongest and easiest to live with; almond and oval make fingers look longer; coffin, stiletto and lipstick are the boldest but need length and careful structure. Pick a shape for your hands and your work, not just the photo you saw.
The 8 shapes at a glance

A full set of extensions takes about two hours; the times show how much a shape adds. Times are approximate.

Shape 1
Round nails
Follows the curve of the fingertip, with softly curved sides and tip. The most natural shape there is.
- How it's done
- Sidewalls are filed straight up, then the free edge is filed in one smooth arc from corner to corner, matching the curve of the cuticle.
- How long it takes
- The quickest shape: a few minutes of filing within a standard set.
- Strength
- Very strong
- Best length
- Short. Round nails look best barely past the fingertip.
- Suits
- Short fingers, small nail beds and nails that break easily.
- Good for
- Doctors, nurses, dentists, chefs, fitness trainers, musicians and anyone who works with their hands all day.

Shape 2
Square nails
Straight, parallel sides and a flat tip with sharp corners. Clean, modern and bold.
- How it's done
- The sidewalls are filed parallel and the tip is filed straight across at 90°, keeping the corners crisp.
- How long it takes
- Quick: a few minutes of filing within a standard set.
- Strength
- Strong
- Best length
- Short to long. The flat edge shows French tips and ombre well.
- Suits
- Long, slim fingers and narrow nail beds. Square can make short fingers look shorter.
- Good for
- Office and corporate work, designers and anyone who loves French tips. Keep it short if you type all day; the corners can snag.

Shape 3
Squoval nails (soft square)
A square shape with the corners softened: straight sides, a flat tip and rounded edges.
- How it's done
- Filed as a square first, then each corner is softened with a few light strokes so nothing catches.
- How long it takes
- Quick: only a minute or two more than square.
- Strength
- Very strong
- Best length
- Short to medium.
- Suits
- Almost everyone. It suits most finger lengths and nail beds.
- Good for
- Teachers, office and IT staff, students, homemakers and anyone who wants a practical everyday shape that still looks polished.

Shape 4
Almond nails
Slim, tapered sides that narrow to a rounded peak, like an almond. Elegant and the most requested shape for extensions.
- How it's done
- Each sidewall is filed in towards the centre from the stress area to the tip, then the peak is softly rounded. Both sides must taper equally.
- How long it takes
- Moderate: about 10 minutes more than a square set to get every nail symmetrical.
- Strength
- Strong
- Best length
- Medium to long. Almond needs some length to taper.
- Suits
- Short or wide fingers and wide nail beds: the taper makes fingers look longer and slimmer.
- Good for
- Brides, makeup artists and beauticians (no corners to scratch clients), sales, hospitality and front-of-house roles.

Shape 5
Oval nails
A longer, slimmer version of round, shaped like an egg. Graceful and classic.
- How it's done
- The sides are filed slightly inwards and the tip in a smooth, elongated curve. It is longer and narrower than round, but softer than almond.
- How long it takes
- Quick to moderate: a few minutes more than round.
- Strength
- Strong
- Best length
- Short to medium.
- Suits
- Short fingers and wide nail beds, which oval lengthens without needing much length.
- Good for
- Corporate roles, receptionists, lawyers, bankers and anyone who wants a refined, conservative look.

Shape 6
Coffin nails (ballerina)
Tapered sides like almond, but ending in a flat, squared tip, like a ballet shoe. Trendy and dramatic.
- How it's done
- The sides are tapered in towards the tip, then the tip is filed flat. It needs a strong apex over the stress area so the narrowed tip doesn't snap.
- How long it takes
- Longer: about 15–20 minutes more than a square set, for the extra length and structure.
- Strength
- Needs structure
- Best length
- Medium to long. Coffin needs length to taper and look balanced.
- Suits
- Long fingers, or anyone who wants a bold, fashion-forward look and a big canvas for nail art.
- Good for
- Influencers, models, fashion and creative work, and party or wedding guests. Not ideal for heavy hands-on work.

Shape 7
Stiletto nails
Long and tapered to a sharp point. The most dramatic shape.
- How it's done
- Both sidewalls are filed in sharply to meet at a point in the centre, with a strong, well-placed apex for strength.
- How long it takes
- Longer: about 15–20 minutes more than a square set; the point must be perfectly central on all ten nails.
- Strength
- Needs structure
- Best length
- Long. Stiletto needs length to form the point.
- Suits
- Long, slim fingers, or anyone happy to adapt daily tasks to their nails.
- Good for
- Performers, models, influencers and statement occasions. Avoid if you type a lot, cook, care for children or work with clients' faces or hair.

Shape 8
Lipstick nails
An angled, slanted tip, like a freshly used lipstick bullet. Unusual and fashion-forward.
- How it's done
- The sides are kept straight and the tip is filed at a diagonal, with all ten nails slanting in the same direction.
- How long it takes
- Longer: about 15 minutes more than a square set, to keep every angle matching.
- Strength
- Moderate
- Best length
- Medium to long.
- Suits
- Long fingers and anyone who wants to stand out.
- Good for
- Fashion, beauty and creative professionals, and statement looks for events.
Which nail shape suits your job?
Your work decides how much your nails go through every day. A shape that fights your routine will chip, snag or break; the right one lasts until your refill.
| Work | Best shapes | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Doctors, nurses and dental staff | Natural short nails; round if anything | Hospital hygiene rules usually prohibit artificial or long nails for staff in patient care. Check your workplace policy. |
| Chefs and food handlers | Short round or squoval | Short, smooth edges trap less food and are safer with gloves. Many kitchens restrict extensions. |
| Office, IT and data entry | Short squoval, oval or round | Comfortable for typing all day, with no corners catching on keys. |
| Teachers and students | Squoval or oval, short to medium | Practical for writing and daily tasks while still looking polished. |
| Homemakers and parents of young children | Short round or squoval | Strong for cooking and cleaning, and gentle around children. |
| Fitness trainers and athletes | Short round | Least likely to break when gripping weights or equipment. |
| Makeup artists, hairstylists and beauticians | Short almond or oval | No corners or points to scratch clients' faces or scalps. |
| Musicians | Very short round | Long nails get in the way of keys and strings. |
| Corporate, sales and hospitality | Almond, oval or squoval, medium | Elegant and professional in meetings and with customers. |
| Brides and wedding guests | Almond, oval or coffin, medium | Flattering in photos, especially with mehndi and rings. |
| Influencers, models and creatives | Coffin, stiletto or lipstick | The most striking shapes and the biggest canvas for nail art. |
How to choose your shape
- Short or wide fingers: almond or oval to lengthen them.
- Long, slim fingers: any shape works; square and coffin look especially good.
- Wide nail beds: almond or oval slim them; avoid wide square.
- Nails that break often: round or squoval, kept short.
- First set of extensions: squoval or almond at medium length is the easiest to get used to.
- Lots of nail art: coffin or square give the biggest canvas.

Nail shape questions, answered
What are the 8 main nail shapes?
Round, square, squoval (soft square), almond, oval, coffin (ballerina), stiletto and lipstick.
Which nail shape is the strongest?
Round and squoval are the strongest because they have no narrow tips or sharp corners. Coffin and stiletto need a well-built apex to stay strong.
Which nail shape makes fingers look longer?
Almond and oval. Their tapered sides lengthen short or wide fingers. Square can make short fingers look shorter.
Does the shape change the price of nail extensions?
No. At MG Makeovers a full set is priced the same in any shape: acrylic ₹1,500 and gel ₹1,800. Longer, more structured shapes simply take a little more time.
How long does it take to shape nail extensions?
A full set of extensions takes about two hours. Round, square, squoval and oval add little to that; almond adds about 10 minutes, and coffin, stiletto and lipstick about 15–20 minutes for the extra length and symmetry.
Can I change my nail shape at a refill?
Yes, as long as there is enough length. Going from pointed to square needs a new set or more length; going from square to round or almond can usually be filed in at a refill.
Which shape is best for nail art?
Coffin and square give the widest canvas for detailed art, almond suits florals and French tips, and short round or squoval suit minimal designs.
